Mission
The American Factor V Leiden Association is dedicated to its mission to serve as a central resource to the general public and medical community, expand awareness, promote education, advocate for and support those affected, assist in establishing testing guidelines, strongly encourage additional research, and facilitate in the exchange of information relating to Factor V Leiden. The ultimate goal is to save lives that would be lost to thrombosis related to Factor V Leiden.
Objectives
- To increase public awareness and promote education about Factor V Leiden through all means available.
- To save lives by assisting healthcare professionals in helping their patients evaluate and lower their risk of life-threatening blood clots brought on by Factor V Leiden.
- To be a central resource to the greater public and to healthcare professionals in finding answers for their patients, especially as “direct-to-consumer” DNA testing kits that include Factor V Leiden testing become more prevalent.
- To be a strong advocate and provide an open community forum for everyone affected by or interested in Factor V Leiden.
- To collect in one place a comprehensive library of resources containing a wide range of published works including the most up-to-date, evidence-based research studies being done on Factor V Leiden.
- To disseminate the information that has been obtained from the latest research and discoveries relating to Factor V Leiden to all interested parties in a timely manner.
- To bring together those in the medical and scientific communities who have an interest in Factor V Leiden and provide them with a discussion board and open forum for the exchange of pertinent information.
- To assist authorities in establishing more precise and specific testing guidelines that take a common sense approach, are medically based given the latest research findings, and truly take into consideration the risks and benefits of knowing if you have the disorder.
- To encourage more widespread testing for the Factor V Leiden mutation, especially for at risk women who are considering birth control or hormone therapy, individuals with a genetic predisposition or family history of blood clots, or have other diseases or disorders that, when combined with Factor V Leiden, are known to increase the risk for blood clots.
- To encourage and promote additional Factor V Leiden research in treatment options and other areas that are needed by working with the scientific community throughout the world.
- To offer a “Tribute” to the doctors and scientists who are and have researched and dedicated their time and talents to obtaining knowledge about Factor V Leiden.
- To provide a “Memorial” to remember those lives lost due to complications caused by Factor V Leiden.
Together through knowledge and awareness we can reduce the risk and help to improve and save lives.
